I can remember him most during our many trips to the lake. He and Grandmother would always take several, or all of their rambunctious grandchildren to the lake in the summer. I remember my grandfather getting up early to go fish. He would make coffee, slowly slurp it and eat oatmeal cookies, while Kim and I would sit there rolling our eyes at how stinkin' loud he was. I mean didn't he know we were trying to sleep. :)
The smell of a pipe will immediately remind me of him, walking around outside, because Grandmother disapproved. :)
He loved children. In his last days, children would make him smile when there had not been a smile on his face in days. So sweet. He loved children...
He loved being a pilot. He was a helicopter pilot. He flew in two wars, World War II and Vietnam, and countless other tours. He once told me that he had logged almost 30,000 hours in his career of flying. He loved to fly...
He loved to give. He was always looking for a soldier to help out. Countless soldiers and their families lived with my grandparents over the years. There was always someone else to make apart of the family. And we did, because that's what we knew, he taught us that. They built an apartment above his workshop to house families that were in training at Fort Rucker. Wow...he loved to give, and he loved people...
He loved to work. We always thought he would die while he was building something in his workshop. He was constantly building cabinets for a church who needed them. Building a house for my parents. Building a church in some other part of the country. He worked until dark, or until a braves game came on. He loved to build things...
He loved his wife. He did not always know where she was, but he would always say when asked, "she's probably up at that church". He kissed her in front of us. He was gentle with her. He would NOT allow us to be disrespectful to her. If you were ugly to grandmother, you would deal with grandaddy about it. He loved that woman.
He loved the Lord. I can still hear him praying in my head. He talked to God, trusted God, honored God, and walked with him. He was in Love with Jesus.
He loved his family.
He was a good man.
Now he stands before the Lord,
He did well.
Bye Bye sweet Grandaddy. We miss you, but know that you are whole again. In the arms of your Savior. Tell Him we say thanks for giving us such a great Grandaddy, and a great example.
